The Institute of Philosophy, RCH, cordially invites you to its upcoming talk Prof. Gaetano Chiurazzi (University of Turin) The Introduction of the Concept of dynamis in Plato from the Theaetetus to the Sophist
Abstract:
Why does Plato define, in a very surprising way, Being as dynamis in the Sophist? This paper raises this question, trying to find an answer in the dialogue which in many senses paves the way for the Sophist, that is the Theaetetus. Unlike the usual readings of it, which are focused on its gnoseological issues, this lecture inserts the Theaetetus profoundly into the debate about the commensurable and incommensurable magnitudes, which has marked the philosophical and mathematical thought between V and IV Century B.C., and of which Theaetetus was one of the main protagonists. The argumentation of the dialogue shows how this debate was important for Plato, to the point of considering positively the role of the incommensurable, and of its ontological correlate, the dynamis, in the elaboration of a new form of logos and a new ontology.
