Absztrakt:
Ernest Nagel's place in the history of American philosophy is that of a bridge-builder. Raised within the American philosophical tradition, he became one of the staunchest supporters of logical empiricism in the United States. His was a need and desire for clarity: he opted for that philosophical approach that he believed could deliver some progress in philosophical debate – and that was the rising analytic philosophy. Yet, Nagel never forgot or rejected some of the most distinctive insights of classical American philosophy. The goal of the presentation is to discuss and assess Nagel's debt towards pragmatism. Indeed, while Nagel was explicit in reclaiming for himself the label of naturalist, he was not as clear in recognizing himself as a pragmatist, despite the significant influence that pragmatist themes exerted on his philosophical outlook. In my talk I will argue that Nagel's lukewarmness towards pragmatism was due to some objective ambiguity within the category. I will first assess this category and I will then offer a tentative grid for interpreting his indebtedness to classical pragmatism. I will defend the thesis that the best way to understand Nagel's philosophical debt to pragmatism is by adopting a piecemeal approach.
